How to use Average Marks Calculator

An arithmetic mean gives every score equal weight. Enter a list of obtained marks to see the total, average and range. This is most meaningful when the scores use the same maximum mark or scale.

If one paper is out of 50 and another is out of 100, averaging raw marks does not express an overall percentage. Use total obtained and maximum marks in the marks percentage tool, or use weighted average for a specified weighting scheme.

The formula

Average = sum of scores / number of scores

A worked example

Marks: 78, 85, 92, 65, 80

Average marks: 80

All scores have equal weight. Use weighted average if subjects have different importance.

Questions about this calculation

Can papers have different maximum marks?

The arithmetic still works, but the result is not an overall percentage. Use the marks percentage calculator with summed totals.

Are subjects weighted differently?

No. Each listed score contributes equally.
